Slam was well known for his skilled bow playing on the bass. He would often hum along with his bow playing, which had a unique and resonant buzzing sound. He gained popularity as part of the duo "Slim and Slam", with bandmate Slim Gaillard. Stewart worked with many greats over his career, including Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, and so many more. This painting references Slam Stewart's performance in the famous lindy hop clip "Hellzapoppin'".
