Original 8"x8" watercolor painting on cold press paper. Unframed painting only.
Madeline “Sahji” Jackson was an exotic dancer, also known as a shake dancer, in Harlem, New York. Her performances can be recognized by her sensuality, glamour, and athleticism.
Sahji is an example of (1) the incredible performances of Black femme dancers in the 30s-50s, and (2) how poorly their history has been documented. The combination of the scandalous nature of their performances plus the extreme prejudice against Black women meant that documenting their art was deprioritized, and even avoided. However some clips of Sahji are still available online today.
