As suggested by her last name, Armstrong was at one point married to the well known trumpet player Louis Armstrong. She played an undeniable role in elevating his career to the stardom he came to experience. However, beyond her shrewd support of Louis, Armstrong built an extensive and impactful career as a pianist and band leader in Chicago. At times her position as a female band leader created extra appeal, and at other times it made it difficult for Armstrong to get hired. Despite this, Armstrong produced many records, characterized by her electric and soulful playing.
