Leon James was a prolific jazz dancer at the center of its development. He and Edith Matthews won the first Harvest Moon Ball in New York, helping solidify lindy hop as a prominent dance form of the era. Leon was also a core member of Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers and appeared in several films including “A Day at the Races”, “The Spirit Moves”, and “The Big Apple.” Leon continued to perform and teach throughout his life, working with partner Al Minns to educate viewers and students about the vernacular of jazz dance.
