John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie's impact on jazz and music history is hard to overstate. He was one of the most impactful pioneers of bebop, often credited as being one of its original inventors. Over the course of his career he contributed to and then defined the course of jazz history. He championed the integration of Afro-Cuban, Caribbean, and Brazilian music into jazz, which are still common in contemporary jazz music today.
Fun fact: his trademark bent trumpet was created when someone fell on his trumpet backstage. He liked the sound of the bent trumpet so much that he had his trumpets specially made from then on.
