Original 8"x10" watercolor painting on cold press paper. Unframed painting only.

Chick Webb was the epitome of perseverance. Due to injuries as a child and tuberculosis of the spine, Chick was 4'1" and had a severely hunched back. He had a custom drum set made to accommodate his size and create uproarious solos. Chick didn't read music, but he memorized solos impeccably.

Chick left a shining legacy leading the house band of the Savoy Ballroom. He won a number of battles of the bands, including against Count Basie and Benny Goodman. He also helped Ella Fitzgerald kickstart her career in her late teens by bringing her into his band.

Chick died in his early 30s due to continued health complications. To have left such a bright mark on the history of jazz during his relatively short career is a testament to his tenacity and talent.
